Paste's Top 50

I'll start by saying this: Paste's Top 50 of 2008 offers surprises. To get a quick glean of what I mean, take a look at number 50, then close your eyes and peer at number one. What happened? Now go back and check out what is or isn't happening in between. If you recall, last year they awarded the top spot to the National's fourth album, Boxer. This year it goes to a debut. But not the debut you're thinking. Give you a hint: You're not going to guess it. In other news, it's cool to see Torche in there even if they should be (way) higher. Now see for yourself.

Wiz" Wieczorek on drums they found an instant chemistry and began writing songs together on the road. Immediately following that tour they recorded, 'Let's Just Be' which was released in April of 2007. TRY

One part Wilco, one part Spoon, and one part harsh Wisconsin weather all combine to produce this warm winter quilt of a record, though, through its cool tint of alt-country twang and beneath its warm, drawn-out pop melodies, Status Quo Ante Bellum effortlessly exudes the full array of its home state’s seasons. Lead singer and guitarist Peter Pisano’s smiley yet sardonic vocals carry the album as the band delicately pushes forward through each song. The instrumentation is that of a typical set-up of guitar, bass, drums, and keys with select textural additives that make for a full, well-executed sound with its altering dynamics and intricacies.

“It’s hard not to have high expectations for burgeoning local indie rock band The Wars of 1812. Seemingly out of nowhere, the band is preparing to pounce onto the scene with an album that recalls the pop structures of songwriting heavyweights like Spoon (who, in turn, recall the Beatles) and early Wilco.”

New NHL Website

September 23, 2008 | By Matt Semansky

The National Hockey League will unveil its new website tomorrow, an offering that includes several new rich media and editorial features designed to appeal to dedicated fans.

The most notable change is the addition of GameCenter and GameCenter Live. The former will serve as the landing page for NHL.com on game nights, and will feature real-time statistical updates, highlight videos, game photos, radio feeds from local broadcasters and a user chat function.

GameCenter Live is a subscription service that gives subscribers access to all the features of GameCenter, as well as live video streaming of NHL games.

Andre Mika, senior vice-president and executive in charge of new media for the NHL, said the revamped NHL.com—which also features more blogs, rich media content and regular updates on hockey stories—gives fans a more complete online experience.

“We’ve created an environment that’s pretty active,” said Mika. “We tried to look at every area of the site and improve the user experience.”

Hockey historians, as well as current fans, will enjoy the site’s upgraded archive of information about teams and players from previous NHL eras, added Mika.

“We know hockey fans want to know what’s going on right now, but we also know that hockey fans have a passion for the game that’s like baseball—very stat-driven,” he said. “They want to go back and look at the stats and career of a player from the past, and we’ve made that information much more accessible to fans.”

The NHL has also announced a partnership with Yahoo Sports to implement the league’s first official fantasy pool game. Under the terms of the deal, the NHL will supply video highlights to users who create a hockey pool on the Yahoo Sports site.

When users access their Yahoo NHL pools, they will have the option of viewing highlights from the previous evening’s games. NHL.com and the Yahoo Sports site will link to each other to reinforce the partnership.

The new NHL.com begins beta testing tomorrow, with users having the option of visiting the new site or staying with the previous version. According to Mika, the league expects any problems to be worked out and the new features fully operational by the start of the season in early October.

New York-based Rocket Fuel consulted on design and strategy for the NHL.com relaunch, while the Washington, D.C. office of AKQA handled the implementation of the changes.

iPhone version 2.1 available

Apple's iPhone 2.1: The Bug-Fix You've Been Waiting For
By Dylan Tweney September 15, 2008 | 6:13:06 PMCategories: IPhone

Apple rolled out version 2.1 of its iPhone software on Friday, and widespread reports suggest that it successfully fixes numerous problems, including 3G data reception.
Here's a rundown of iPhone 2.1's enhancements.
Fewer dropped calls. In a survey conducted by Wired.com, 40 percent of readers report that they're getting fewer dropped calls than they did before the update. Another 43 percent currently state that the update has made no change one way or the other, while 15 percent state that they're getting more dropped calls than ever. Upshot: The new software probably won't hurt your calls, and might lead to fewer dropped ones.
Increased 3G download speeds. "We're seeing an overall more consistent kbps score and the number of 3G tests where the user scored a real low 100kbps -- 300kbps is down," said Donovan Lewis, the administrator of Test My iPhone, in an article on Cult of Mac. In other words: Fewer people are seeing very slow 3G speeds, and (presumably) more people are seeing faster speeds.
Faster application installation. Ars Technica reports that applications are quicker to install under iPhone 2.1. Also, they report that there's less lag when opening, browsing and searching an address book of about 600 contacts. (On my own iPhone, with nearly 2,000 contacts, the contacts lag is only slightly minimized.)
Better song info and recommendations. As Gadget Lab reported last week, the iPhone's list of songs now displays an extra line of information about each track. There's also the much-vaunted "Genius" recommendation feature, which suggests additional songs you might want to buy based on what you're listening to now.
More bars. Many reviewers are reporting that phone reception in general is better. In many cases reviewers say that the signal-strength indicator in the corner immediately added bars after the update finished installing. Just a trick? Probably not, since most reports agree that reception is indeed better.
Reduced backup time. One complaint about previous versions was that the "backup" phase of iPhone syncing took way too long -- 20 minutes or more. That problem appears to be fixed now, according to Gizmodo.
Bottom line? Get it now -- this is a must-have upgrade and it delivers on most, if not all, of its promises.
What are your experiences with iPhone 2.1? Let us know in the comments!

Early in 2001, Hannigan began singing as a lead vocalist for Rice's music at a concert in the Temple Bar Music Centre in Dublin. She appears on his debut album O singing on the majority of the tracks. She also often accompanied Rice in his live performances, as a vocalist and occasionally on electric guitar and alongside bass, and on one occasion (Glastonbury Festival, 2003) played the drums on a track. Most recently, Hannigan contributed to Rice's album 9, including a lead vocal on the album's first single, "9 Crimes".

Previous to Hannigan releasing her solo material officially, some live recordings have been made available through trading networks of her performing covers on tour, or on radio shows. Available covers include traditional folk songs, and more contemporary covers including; Joni Mitchell's "Willy", Nina Simone's "Be My Husband" (from 1965 Pastel Blues), Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" and Roy Orbison's "Love Hurts". She has also performed live with her own band, The Daisy Okell Quartet, but no recordings are known to have been released. She also performed a solo set at the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Electric Picnic festivals in County Laois, Ireland.

She has contributed guest vocals on a number of other artists' recordings, including The Frames, Mic Christopher, and Herbie Hancock. She performed on the track "Don't Explain," with Damien Rice on Hancock's album, "Possibilities."

The track-listing has been revealed for Hannigan’s Sea Sew album, realeased in Ireland on September 12, 2008. Housed in a sleeve that Lisa did the needle-work for herself, it features ‘An Ocean And A Rock’, ‘Venn Diagram’, ‘Sea Song’, ‘Splishy Splashy’, ‘I Don’t Know’, ‘Keep It All’, ‘Courting Blues’, ‘Pistachio’, ‘Teeth’ and the lead single, ‘Lille’, which will be available as a free lisahannigan.ie download on August 25. Musical personnel include Donagh Molloy, Tomo, Shane Fitzsimons, Lucy Wilkins, Vyvienne Long, Gavin Glass and Cathy Davey who provides backing vocals on some of the songs.

"It felt like gravity pulling the sound towards being bigger. From solo
acoustic to a trio to a four- piece electric group. I found myself surrounded by bland half-baked folk acts and wanted out. This project feels right. It feels like a band should." - TK Webb

TK (Thomas Kelly) Webb was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri and began his musical journey around the age of 9 when he picked up his first guitar. By the age of thirteen, he had already played in a bunch of punk rock bands around town and continued honing his playing throughout the 90s. In 1999, TK made the decision to relocate to Brooklyn, NY, where he built a loyal following through his live performances, which ranged from blues-soaked acoustic shows to spaced out, feedback jams.

One thing that became clear was that TK was a truly gifted player, capable of producing some startlingly convincing Delta Blues. Following the release of TK Webb's second solo LP, Phantom Parade (Social Registry, 2006), dubbed by Rolling Stone Magazine as a four-star, "oddly gripping" effort, it was evident that Webb's songwriting was beginning to outgrow the sound that had peppered his solo efforts. The new songs that would go on to comprise the Ancestor record referenced the rock music that Webb had grown up on. This sparked his decision to form The Visions in the summer of 2007.

Joining Webb in the new band on second guitar is Brian Hale (ex-Love As Laughter), who had previously been accompanying Webb on bass following the release of Phantom Parade, Ben McConnell (Phosphorescent) on drums, and Jordan Gable rounding out the line up on bass. This new cast helps take TK's acoustic visions and plugs them in through the Marshall, making for a heavier, more cohesive listen than Webb's previous work.

Produced by Matt Boynton at his Vacation Islands Studios in Brooklyn, Ancestor speaks of modern day paranoia, love, and a host of other human emotions many of us face in our day-to-day, making for not only an amazingly heavy, but also a sincerely beautiful recording.

At times, Toronto singer-songwriter Jennifer Castle’s debut feels just about delicate enough to blow away — her dandelion-down voice is usually accompanied only by gently plucked acoustic guitar — but there’s a swampy side to some of the dark folk tunes that gives them some heft.

Castle captures an old-timey Ozark vibe on the eerie Clouds in the Sky, and twins her voice winningly with Doug Tielli’s (brother of Rheostatics’ singer Martin) on the pretty Your Hand is a Wing. On the lilting waltz Don’t Go Now, Castle sounds like a less idiosyncratic Mary Margaret O’Hara as she warbles sadly over Ryan Driver’s piano. The subdued hush and spare arrangements make the disc a bit samey over its duration; apparently, Castle brings out the big dynamic guns live, which one suspects would give her bittersweet, lovely songs even more sting.

“The first-ever anthology from alt-pop/rock singer-songwriter Josh Rouse collects 32 songs from his Rykodisc years including seven previously unreleased tracks. Spanning 1998-2005, the material spotlights the artist’s poetic and keenly observed lyrical bent and his evocative roots and folk-flavored, guitar-driven melodic pop sensibilities. THE BEST OF THE RYKODISC YEARS distills the essence of what Rouse calls his “first stage,” and he was instrumental in hand-picking his best songs, personal favorites and rarities including demos and outtakes.

Rouse released five albums and two EPs for Rykodisc beginning with Dressed Up Like Nebraska, a striking 1998 debut that Rolling Stone colorfully noted, “lands Rouse smack-dab in the company of some of rock & roll’s contemporary songwriting giants. Think late-model, but still-in-the-Replacements Paul Westerberg crossed with a moody, youthful Tom Petty and, um, Morrissey.” Rouse’s style evolves and flows through his subsequent releases, including: Home (2000), Under Cold Blue Stars (2002), 1972 (2003) and Nashville (2005) - the latter two made with producer Brad Jones -as well as Chester, his 1999 EP collaboration with Lambchop mastermind Kurt Wagner and the limited edition, out-of-print EP Bedroom Classics Vol. 1 (2001).

Throughout Disc One, the conversational ease of Rouse’s singing and his unerring melodic gift connect and inform diverse standouts including “Late Night Conversation,” “It’s The Nighttime,” “Feeling No Pain” and “Comeback (Light Therapy).” Highlights also include “Directions” - a cut from Home that also appeared on the soundtrack for the Cameron Crowe film Vanilla Sky and is perhaps Rouse’s best-known song - and “65,” which refers to the highway running through Nashville, where he and Wagner recorded Chester when they were neighbors there. Disc two opens with the complete six-song sequence from Bedroom Classics Vol. 1, and closes with seven previously unissued rarities including a demo for the 2003 single “Christmas With Jesus,” an outtake from Dressed Up Like Nebraska (”Cannot Talk”) and more.”

Hand picking members from The Polyphonic Spree, Midlake, and The Paperchase, he composed this indescribably diverse album under the guidance of Grammy nominated producer and engineer John Congleton (Explosions In The Sky, The Polyphonic Spree, Modest Mouse). Pomegranate plays out like a collection of short stories, each song as varied in style and sound as they are in subject and character. Astronautalis’s pop sensibility manages to weave catchy melodic strains that’ll haunt you for days.”

4 Marshall - La Blogtheque

Music video reinvented on the Web

IAN BARRETT FOR THE TORONTO STAR
Montreal’s Arcade Fire.
August 26, 2008
JAKE COYLE
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK–The first time Arcade Fire performed in Paris, Mathieu Saura stood outside the venue with his girlfriend, holding up a sign that read, "Please, we want to come to the show.''

The band's bassist, Richard Reed Perry, got them in, and ever since, Saura might as well have not left. Under the name Vincent Moon, he's gone from a fan begging for tickets to an in-demand filmmaker who has revolutionized music video.

His films are stripped down, intimate videotaped performances – shot in one take, often of an act simply strolling down a street or playing in a parking lot. More than a hundred musicians – from Arcade Fire to REM – have flocked to work with him on the so-dubbed Take-Away Shows, part of the website La Blogotheque.

Following the demise of the televised music video, Saura's videos show a new marriage of music and film that replaces the artifice of big budget music videos with the raw simplicity of performance.

He's clearly struck a chord. The videos may not be playing on MTV, but they're all over the Web, where sites like the Black Cab Sessions and Pitchfork TV have joined in with a similar minimalist style.

Meet the Music Video 2.0.

The origins of Saura's inspiration was Arcade Fire, a band that has made of habit of beginning or ending shows acoustically in a venue's lobby or outside on the street. They are sing-a-longs typically amplified only by a bullhorn.

"That kind of gave him a spark for the films," said Win Butler, recalling the band's first show in Saura's native Paris. "He's one of those filmmakers who wants to be a musician and I think that the way his films are trying to capture little fresh moments is a cool approach.''

Previously a photographer, Saura, 28, partnered with Christophe Abric (he also has a working name: Chryde), who created La Blogotheque and often handles sound on productions – which usually amount to little more than a small digital camera and a microphone. The videos – done on the fly – are posted roughly weekly on the site, which collects about 8,000 hits a day. The videos are also frequently embedded by major music blogs and are posted on YouTube.

In them, you can see the normally symphonic Sufjan Stevens singing alone on a rooftop, the Shins playing while walking down the street or the melodic indie band Grizzly Bear languidly performing while lounging in an apartment.

"It's very important to me to not let the musician try to make the song perfect," said Saura. "It's so much more human. When a musician is doing this beautiful version of a song but messes up and then continues, yeah, that's beautiful to me.''

The effect is often that a not-widely-known band – perhaps a progressive indie act familiar only to enthusiasts – is thrust out of its niche and into the world. More often than not, passers-by are impressed by what they hear.

Performing in a vacant courtyard, the experimental band Menomena finds unlikely fans in two toddlers who dance to music most hipsters would only watch coolly. Andrew Bird, the warbling singer-songwriter and violinist, draws applause from businessmen happening by in Montmartre. Emanuel Lundgren, lead singer of the populous Swedish pop band I'm From Barcelona, walks down a nighttime street like a pied piper, as his band and others join him.

The environs recall another outdoor French movement: the Impressionists. Instead of painting, it's music en plein air.

"As far as the modern world is concerned, these are natural environments," said Zach Condon, lead singer of the Balkan-flavored band Beirut. The group did a full album's worth of Take-Away Shows for their last disc, Flying Club Cup. "It's filmed in its own elements, from where it came from – the streets and the bars and people's apartments.''

As fame has encroached (in May, Variety dubbed Saura and Abric "innovators to watch''), larger projects have followed, including a film with the National (A Skin, a Night) and several collaborations with REM for its latest album, Accelerate: a film (6 Days), an official music video and a host of Take-Away Shows.

Michael Stipe, who has frequently looked to work with filmmakers and photographers with distinct visions, called up Saura after seeing La Blogotheque.

"Let's put the final nail in the coffin on the term 'music video' and allow it to be something of the past because that's exactly what it is," said Stipe. "It served its purpose very well in the 1980s and 1990s. Music video's time came and went.''

In these videos, Stipe sees a dramatic and exciting evolution, which he believes has a "power to the people" quality made possible by new technology and the Internet.

"I don't think music or film has been in a more exciting place in 20 years," said Stipe. "I was just blown away by their beauty and how raw they were.''

Other filmmakers or aspiring fans have also created Take-Away Shows; neither Saura nor Abric feels anything protective about their brand. Saura is currently preparing a new website, TemporaryAreas.com, and has numerous other projects in the works.

Working with a similar aesthetic is the Black Cab Sessions, which are also one-take videos of a performance but with one notable distinction: Every video is made in the back seat of a London taxi.

By contrast, MTV's Unplugged looks downright extravagant.

The site was created by British filmmaker Jono Stevens along with production companies Just So Films and Hidden Fruit. Its premise is even simpler: Hail a cab. Ask the driver if it's OK if a band plays a song in the back seat. Pack in – maybe just a few members since space is limited. And record the song-long ride, bumps and all.

"We were just getting a little bit bored of watching the music promos," Stevens said, referring to traditional music videos. "We didn't have much clout or really any money, so the idea was to try to find a way to get our vision out there and get people to buy into it.''

The site collects about 350,000 visitors a month, but still hasn't been monetized. Right now, it's mainly just a fun and cheap mode of expression. Their productions costs are nothing but the fare. (It also has a Dutch TV precursor: the show "(behind) closed doors," which features acts performing in an elevator.)

For an artist, it's easy to agree to do. It doesn't take much time, you don't have to answer silly questions and you might even be able to do it on the way from your hotel to the concert venue. More than 50 acts have done videos now, including Spoon, My Morning Jacket and the suitably named Death Cab for Cutie.

Matt Berninger, the lead singer of the National, has done a Black Cab Session and worked extensively with Saura. He sees "a significant shift in the way people are watching music-film" that recalls subway buskers.

"It's just one person with a guitar and a couple people banging on parking signs or whatever to try to make a song," said Berninger, whose Take-Away Shows won the band at least one new fan: Stipe. "There's something very humble and vulnerable about that.''

The trend is seeping into culture. Last year's hit indie film Once – a raw musical about an Irish busker played by the Frames' Glen Hansard – could have been a fictional version of a Take-Away Show.

The influential music site Pitchfork Media earlier this year launched Pitchfork TV, a video site with much the same approach to music and film. The site includes a series called Juan's Basement that features live performances in a basement and another series titled Don't Look Down where bands play on a New York rooftop.

Seeing a new era after the decline of the 24-hour music video network, the site's mission statement declares: "Now that the technology is here, we hope to finally do it the way that people who really care about music have always wanted to see it done.''

Compadre Records/Music World Music has announced the release of “JOHNNY CASH REMIXED,” featuring bold new interpretations of Johnny Cash classics from top music remixers and producers who were recruited to take the original master recordings and infuse them with the sounds and technology of modern music styles such as hip hop and dance music. The album, which includes a performance from Snoop Dogg, will be available in stores and online on October 14. A vinyl deluxe-edition will be available on September 23 in select independent record stores.

“Johnny Cash Remixed” is a tribute to the legacy of an American music icon whose work has touched every contemporary genre, and has the blessing and support of the custodians of Johnny Cash’s legacy.

“My father made his stead by defying the expected and accepted way of things,” says John Carter Cash, son of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash and Executive Producer of the Academy Award©-winning film “Walk the Line.” “He set the standard at the same time. He would have loved this remix record. While it stays true to the original recordings, this CD touches on undiscovered ground. This is what my father was about: staying true to tradition while creating groundbreaking new music.”

Johnny Cash classics were licensed from Cash’s first record label, the legendary Sun Records, also the first record label home of luminaries such as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison. The original tracks, recorded with Cash’s first band the Tennessee Two from 1956-1959, were pure and stark, with only the essentials; guitar, light percussion and Johnny Cash’s unmistakable voice and presence. The new mixes maintain this fantastic charm and personality while filing out the sound and creating daring re-interpretations.

The remixed tracks (and remixers) include “I Walk The Line” featuring Snoop Dogg (QDT, the new production team led by Snoop Dogg — featuring Snoop, Teddy Riley and DJ Quik), “Country Boy” (Sonny J, whose album will be released in August on Astralwerks US), “Get Rhythm” (Philip Steir, the only remixer allowed to work with the Reprise Records Frank Sinatra collection), “Leave that Junk Alone” (Alabama 3, creators of “The Sopranos” theme song), “Folsom Prison Blues” (the legendary Pete Rock), “Hey Porter” (Mocean Worker, whose remix of Elvis Presley’s “Burnin’ Love” was used as a soundtrack to Honda’s Super Bowl TV commercial), “Sugartime” (Kennedy, cornerstone of the new UK Dirty Pop movement), “Trail to Mexico” (indie favorite Mexican Industry of Sound/MIS), “Doin’ My Time” (The Heavy, critically acclaimed UK-based band) and “Wide Open Road” (Count de Money), among others.

A documentary following the making on this album is also in production, produced by Phear Creative in NYC. This short film features interviews from select remixers, filmed in their home studios, including Snoop Dogg captured at the Cash Recording Cabin in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

“Johnny Cash Remixed” is Executive Produced by John Carter Cash, Snoop Dogg, and Mathew Knowles for Music World Productions, Inc. and Co-Executive Produced by Brad Turcotte for Compadre Records/Music World Music and Gregg DeMammos for DeMammos Entertainment.

2 new wilco songs

One Wing (called a "WIP" at Lollapalooza by Jeff - a work in progress) is bittersweet, and heartbreakingly lovely, but builds into those jaw-dropping crescendos that they do so well. The opening minutes have that moody and wistful Fleetwood Mac-ish guitar riff. Sunny Feeling is feisty and evokes what the title describes (even though that feeling is taken away, sadly, by the chorus).

“Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s first collaboration since Gorillaz supplies the theme for the BBC’s coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics as well as providing the score to the opera of the same name, which was a huge success and received extremely positive reviews. ‘Journey To The West’ is performed using both Western and traditional Chinese instruments, and sung in Mandarin, which adds to the authenticity already afforded to it by it’s use of Ancient Chinese texts as a basis.”

The Boy Bathing -2008 Indy Album - worth a listen

If you wanted to build The Boy Bathing from scratch you would start with a healthy dose of lyrical brilliance akin to the stream of consciousness style favored by Bright Eyes. Then you’d take equal parts Sufjan Stevens, Josh Ritter, and Page France to add flavor, depth, and character. Finally you’d throw in some female vocals from Broadway Hush and maybe a bit of Band of Horses and you’d end up with what might be the best indie folk album of the year.

Poop and Not-Poop

Believe it or not, this comes from a category called YouTube Poop:

However, I also was directed by another source to some non-poop.

This one eluded me while growing up, but its hooked me now. A fresh take on a classic album of all time.

BeeGees, Peter Frampton and more - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978) musical and album

The Musical

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is an American musical film released in 1978. Its soundtrack, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, features new versions of songs originally written and performed by The Beatles. The film draws primarily from two of their albums, the 1967 album of the same name and 1969's Abbey Road.

The production is somewhat adapted from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road, a 1974 off-Broadway production[directed by Tom O'Horgan. It tells the loosely-constructed story of a band as they wrangle with the music industry and battle evil forces bent on stealing their instruments and corrupting their home town of Heartland. The film is presented in a form similar to that of a rock opera with the Beatles' songs providing "dialogue" to carry the story, with only George Burns having spoken lines that act to clarify the plot and provide further narration.

Directed by Michael Schultz
Produced by Robert Stigwood
Written by Henry Edwards

2008 debut solo album from the former leader of The
Unbelievable Truth and brother of Radiohead’s Thom. After the
break up of his band, Andy spent a number of years in Moscow
gathering his thoughts. Simple is stripped-back, acoustic and
emotional, often similar to the quieter half of Neil Young’s
After The Gold Rush, Ryan Adams’ Heartbreaker, Elliott Smith,
Gillian Welch, early REM or Low. This is an album of songs
that are beautifully simple and often, simply beautiful. Andy
Yorke, a genuine heart-on-sleeve singer/songwriter. Aktive
Records.

Dr. John -2008 The City That Care Forgot

good read

" Dr. John has been one of the city’s foremost cultural ambassadors since the late ‘60s, so he’s uniquely qualified to fashion a musical response – and his perspective is sharper than most. Joined by a parade of guests, including Eric Clapton, Terence Blanchard, Willie Nelson, and Ani DiFranco, the good Doctor takes his rage, sets it to a second line rhythm, and fires off a series of volleys at Washington."

“One has to hand to it to Edwin McCain. Ten years after his big hit, “I’ll Be,” appeared on Atlantic’s Lava imprint, he’s been all over the map and all but lost musically. Yet, he’s consistently recorded and toured no matter the economic or critical circumstances. He’s also played many different kinds of music, from rootsy, jam-based rock & roll, to introspective solo acoustic shows, to barnstorming Southern R&B dates that are big on covers and crowd-pleasers. In fact, McCain and his band are diverse enough to be able to pull 500 songs out of the hat at any given time. Nobody’s Fault But Mine is his first all-covers record and it’s solid top to bottom. These covers come from the roots of McCain’s raising in Greenville, SC: Southern soul and funk. McCain used most of his road band and some ringers for the date, including the nearly ubiquitous drummer Eddie Bayers; Ivan Neville on various keyboards such as the B-3, Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, clavinet, and backing vocals; and Doug Moffett and Quentin Ware on horns. Guitarist Steve Cropper and singer Joan Osborne both make guest appearances. Produced by veteran Tor Hyams, the approach and mix are loose, dirty, and woolly; the sound Hyams gets here is very immediate and present, nearly live sounding — and yes, that’s a very good thing. It’s raw on the edges and warm in the middle.”

Eef Barzelay (a personal fav. of mine) 2008 - or as Shaps would say "Eaves Barley"

From PopMatters

Download

When Eef Barzelay released his first solo record, 2006’s Bitter Honey, it wasn’t really obvious what he was getting out of the experience. In many ways, it sounded pretty much like a Clem Snide record, which is to be expected since Barzelay was the band’s leader and sole songwriter. Bitter Honey might have been a little stripped-down, but “Ballad of Bitter Honey”, his narrative from the perspective of a dancing girl in a Ludacris video, had Clem Snide archness written all over it. Looking back at songs like “Ballad of Bitter Honey” in the context of his newest solo effort, Lose Big, however, it’s now obvious that Barzelay was beginning to explore characters and personas to say something serious and genuine in his songs.

Lose Big continues in that vein, and it’s a clear sign that Barzelay is faring quite well in his post-Clem Snide world. The record finds Barzelay stretching out, not only in terms of subject matter, but also in terms of arrangements and sound. Things don’t begin well, though, with lead-off track “Could Be Worse”. Featuring loud guitar chords that obscure rather plain vocals by Barzelay, the song discards one of Barzelay’s greatest strengths: the cracking fragility of his voice. As he sings “I can’t find comfort in the fact that it could be worse”, guitars crunching around him, he sounds like pretty much everyone else. That’s quickly remedied, though, as “The Girls Don’t Care” adopts a full-bodied arrangement but allows Barzelay’s vulnerability to come through. His tongue-in-cheek advice to himself and guys in general, though, will probably anger many an indie girl: “Girls don’t care that you ache to be free / See, the girls just want a sweet melody ... don’t listen to Frank Zappa, [or] play Coltrane, Faust, or Can.” And then he wraps the song up by going—shades of Clem Snide’s “Mike Kalinsky”—into just the type of arrangement he’s been talking about.

From there, Barzelay finds ways to play with his sound. “How Dare They” features distorted rumbles of percussion and buzzing guitar, broken by quiet acoustic interludes, as Barzelay sings, “How dare they crash the party in your mind.” It’s a smooth segue from there to “Apocalyptic Friend”, which accuses, “When Rapture comes I understand your car will likely be unmanned / But what about those sitting in the back / Strapped into the baby seat / Sweet milk sticking to their feet / Is this the joy felt waking up your heart?” In the tradition of End of Love‘s “Jews for Jesus Blues” and “God Answers Back”, “Apocalyptic Friend” adds to Barzelay’s growing collection of religion-themed songs. “Apocalyptic Friend” isn’t all condemnation, though, finding compassion for its subject by song’s end. The lilting “True Freedom” is another good example of Barzelay’s ability to twist a song back on itself. You couldn’t ask for a more relaxed arrangement, but Barzelay’s smitten lyrics turn out to be the dark thoughts of a man who’s taken a bottle of pills. It’s one of Barzelay’s most important techniques, this ability to treat his songs almost like short stories. They gain a complexity and a sobriety that was missing from much (though not all) of his Clem Snide work. It was the kind of thing Clem Snide fans didn’t know they were missing when Barzelay was wallowing in word play on songs like “Joan Jett of Arc”, but now that he’s placing a priority on giving his words resonance, they seem like more than pretty, ornate curiosities.

Barzelay reportedly has at least one unreleased Clem Snide record in hand, Hungry Bird, waiting for a proper time to release it into the world. One track from that disc, “Me No”, appears here as a bonus track. Mixing images of combs made from bones with “bah bah bah” choruses, falsetto keening, and kazoos, it might be the last gasp of Clem Snide irony. Barzelay, however, describes the album in intriguing terms, often using the word “apocalyptic”, so maybe it’s equally likely to act as a bridge between Clem Snide and the songwriter that Barzelay felt himself turning into. Time will tell, but however the Clem Snide chapter ends, it’s safe to say that Barzelay is thriving.

coldplay at brixton academy 2008

On Monday night, the eve of the North American release date for their new album, Coldplay performed a free concert at Brixton Academy in London which was broadcast on Radio 1. They performed seven of their new songs off Viva La Vida (whilst getting good art into the collective public consciousness). Many of the new songs seem to possess a sweet air to them, unvarnished but still epic in this setting. Have a listen: here
